Hearing Protection Types

At Athens Hearing and Balance Clinic we want you to know that it’s important to protect your hearing when using firearms in the field or at the range.

Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent and cumulative, but it’s also preventable with the use of passive or digital hearing protection.

Passive

This type of hearing protection utilizes small acoustic filters and a low noise reduction rating. Passive hearing protection is traditionally used for environments where a low number of shots are fired. This permits hearing awareness of game and tracking dog sounds.

Digital

Unlike passive hearing protection, digital hearing protection enhances low-level sounds instead of blocking them. A small microphone picks up external sounds and feeds them to a small speaker in the device. This allows you to hold conversations, detect game, and hear your surroundings. When sounds above 90 dB are recognized, an electronic circuit cuts off the speakers, resulting in instant protection.

Both styles fit hunters and shooters who want amplification, as well as hearing protection. They are available in custom-fit in-the-ear models to ensure maximum comfort and safety.
